How to add custom transitions to CapCut

Creative transitions for CapCut and other mobile editing apps

Maybe you already thought about using creative effects, transitions or overlays in order to make cinematic edits on your phone. Mobile editing apps like CapCut, InShot or Splice offer a wide range of built-in-effects, but sometimes you wan't to use custom effects for a proper mood or simply to stand out.

In this article we will show you, how you can easily add custom / third-party effects to your smartphone video edits (just like in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro). All you need is the effect pack of your choice (like punch hole transitions, shadow overlays, light leaks, whatever matches the style of your video...) and a mobile editing app like CapCut.

Step-by-step tutorial:

1) At first, you need to open your editing project (or create a new one) and import your video footage. Then find the spot, where you want the transition / effect to be (for example between two different clips).

2) Search for the "Overlay"-tab in the menu and select it. Then tap "Add overlay" and the choose the effect you want to use. In this case, we went with an animated punch hole transition, delivered as a GIF. You can also choose videos or still frames as an overlay. Click "Add" to confirm your choice.

3) Next you can adjust the size and positioning of your overlay and trim the length of the transition. When you're done with that, go to "Blend" in the menu.

4) This step is very important, because the blending mode decides the apearance of the effect. Choose whatever looks the best to you and hit the "✓"

5) Well done, you added a transition to your video edit! The shown process works exactly the same for overlays, textures and other effects you want to have on top of your image.
