What are punch holes known for?
"Punch Hole Transitions" have become increasingly popular in filmmaking and editing. They set exciting visual accents and provide a certain vintage character. But only very few people know where they actually come from.
Where do they come from?
Punch holes date back to the days of analog film. As the name suggests they were physically punched into specific frames of the film. When you get right down to it, there are even different types of holes in film. In most cases, it serves as a visual marker to signal the end of a film reel to the projectionist - in this context, we often speak of "cue holes" or colloquially "cigarette burns".
In other cases these holes are punched into the film to mark it and identify it again later - often in the form of numbers.
But no matter what kind of "punch holes" - all of them have one thing in common: scanned and digitalised, they make incredibly good video effects. check them out!
